Happy Birthday Nellie!!!!! Nellie is JU's mascot and she turned 57 today; she is the oldest living dolphin in captivity. At Marineland today, I met the daughter of the woman they named Nellie after! She was the ticket lady at Marineland in the 50's and so they named the new baby dolphin after her, and Nellie the dolphin is setting world records with her lifespan! I also met a woman who grew up at Marineland, and Nellie was her best friend--she would swim laps with her every night! A very fun, unique day; It's pretty cool to have a live mascot that's for sure!
One of the trainers told us some of the things Nellie has lived through in her lifetime: the invention of the Barbie doll, velcro, the Vietnam War, Kennedy's assassination, WaterGate, Beatlemania, the first man on the moon, Martin Luther King's I had a Dream speech, and 9/11, for just a few! She has already doubled the life span of a normal dolphin wild or captive. She's quite the special dolphin!!
This woman is holding a picture of her mother, Nellie!
This woman is holding a picture of herself when she was a girl swimming with Nellie!
They say home is where the heart is, and I would agree. I have a thing for doors and windows, not sure why, but I love photographing different doors and windows. Every major adventure I've gone on, I've taken tons of pictures of doors and windows (from Italy to Mexico to Scotland). But of all the beautiful, quaint, and exotic doors I've seen, this one will always be my favorite. I will always love coming around the bend of our road and seeing this red welcome!!
JU vs. FSU Rainy day of softball, I actually didn't stay for the game, since it was so cold and rainy, but I'm looking forward to watching some action this season when it's warmer...and drier!!
Springtime Robins on their way north, taking a stop in Jacksonville! There were hundreds of robins all over campus today! I will always love robins because my momma loves them! She would always say to us that spring was on the way if robins were in our yard. Even though I'm not at home often anymore, I love getting Momma's text messages about the robins! This one's for you Momma! Enjoy :)
Our campus has been "ribboned"-- Purple ribbons around trees and light poles, door handles, and posts to remind us about Relay for Life which is a charity for leukemia. Almost three weeks ago my grandfather passed away to leukemia so this year, I hope to be able to participate in this event in honor and memory of my grandpa this year.
My grandpa wrote these words for his grandchildren, and they are now framed on my desk: "Trust in God & treasure His written word- Read it daily- If no more than a chapter of Proverbs a day it will reveal God's likes & dislikes to you. Work--If you are working for someone you need to give your best effort every day. If you cannot do this, find a job where you can, a job that you want to do every day- as for the Lord."
Valentine's Night with the girls! Jennah, Grace, Lisa, and I went to see the new movie "Valentine's Day" What a fun way to end the night and weekend!!! Thanks friends! :)
I try to post a picture of something significant that has happened to me every day, and so today this is the only thing that was really significant (don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to boast about myself!). I have been in such a rut with school and feel like I am not doing well in my classes at all so far, so this exam grade was a HUGE boost of confidence!!!
The Schreck clan at Grandpa's Memorial Service. It was a great weekend with family celebrating Grandpa's life. Almost every grandkid was there (we were missing my sister Jessica, and my cousin Josh's wife, Allison) and all the aunts and uncles. It was a blessing for my grandma for all of us to be there. My grandpa told lots of people that he was ready to go home, and he had his passport stamped and bags packed, ready to go. Over and over it was stated that my grandpa is finally home and I kept thinking of a new song by Carrie Underwood called "Temporary Home." The following is the last verse of the song.
~Temporary Home~
Old man, hospital bed The room is filled with people he loves And he whispers don't cry for me I'll see you all someday He looks up and says "I can see God's face."
"This is my temporary Home It's not where I belong Windows and rooms that I'm passin' through This was just a stop,on the way To where I'm going I'm not afraid because I know this was My temporary home."
My grandpa will see all us again someday!! Until then, he is having a blast praising his Lord and Savior!!
The Beates brothers checking out a Lamborghini at a car show on 5th Ave, Naples Eli, our car connoisseur, saw all of his favorite cars: an Aston-Martin, Maserati, Porsche, Rolls Royce, and Lamborghini. It was pretty impressive!
This picture reminded me of those commercials where different products look like they are frowning and then smiling!
Naples Pier, Naples Fl My great-grandfather Floyd Schreck helped build this pier, a staple piece of Naples. We went out to this pier on Saturday, it was really windy!!!! But beautiful of course!
The WHOLE family (well almost...minus Jessica plus Michael) at Eli's Regional Quarter Final Soccer Game. I guess all I have to say is this...I cannot wait to watch my little brother play in the big leagues :) I can only imagine the kind of things he might be able to achieve with the talent God has given him. It's pretty sweet...
I've been studying for tests all week! But I made myself a nice little spot on my bed with my books, computer with powerpoint, and music. These are some of my Christmas lights that decorate my room that I love having on. Colored lights put me in a better mood, so I love having them on, twinkling at me!
I found a song today that fits this picture perfectly. I love the way flowers look right after the rain; there is a quiet beauty about them, and today we had a lot of rain, so God gave me a lot of quiet beauty.
Flower in the Rain Jaci Velasquez
You are the One There's no one else Who lifts me up And gives me water from the well But there's a hole That seems to drain it all away And once again I'm left in fear and doubt When all my strength is crying out
Chorus: So here I am again Willing to be opened up and broken Like a flower in the rain Tell me what have I to do To die and then be raised To reach beyond the pain Like a flower in the rain
The evil wind it blows a storm To rock my world Just when I think I'm safe and warm I'm led astray far too easily It's always hard for me to say I'm wrong Until I know I can't go on
Repeat Chorus
Lord, you have searched me and know When I sleep and when I rise You're familiar with all my ways Even the darkness will shine like the day When you look into my heart.
